International Experience Opportunity for Aboriginal Studies Students

Applications are now open for Aboriginal Studies students interested in 2015 International Experience trip to Belize. Aboriginal Studies students will join students from Equity Studies, Caribbean Studies, First Nations House and Human Biology in visiting the International Institute for Sustainable Studies (ISIS) the week of May 16 – May 24.  Students will visit farms, community organizations and attend talks to learn about sustainability issues related to indigeneity, food sustainability and health.  Students will work with scholar and educator, Dr. Filiberto Penados, who will be the learning guide for the week. Orientation sessions will be scheduled prior to the ISIS visit to familiarize students with Belizean society and history, outline learning objectives and to initiate student conversations across the five units.  On returning to UofT, students will work with the New College Food Systems Coordinator to plan a series of food events for 2015-2016, on themes covered in their ISIS activities.

FUNDING: The total cost for airfare, housing, airport transportation, daily transportation, meals, internet access and administrative fee is approximately $2800 per student.  The majority of the total cost, $2600 in total, will be covered by the Dean’s International Initiative Fund, NewCollege and other administrative funds. Students are expected to raise the remaining $200 from other sources such as college travel grants, student union awards and/or personal contributions by Friday March 27, 2015.

ELIGIBILITY:  Aboriginal Studies majors in their 3rd or 4th year of study and returning to UofT for the fall, 2015 are eligible to apply. Applicants must commit to taking part in planning food activities for 2015-2016.  Selected students must have a valid passport.

Please note that this opportunity involves a commitment to attend an orientation day that will be scheduled in the first two weeks of May, prior to the ISIS visit.  Students must also attend a Safety Abroad session in March.  All students must travel together, leaving Toronto May 16, returning May 24.
