Language Cafe

March 18, 2015 @ 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm

This talk stems from Chantal Fiola’s doctoral research, which focuses on people with Red River Métis ancestry who participate in Anishinaabe spirituality and examines whether this impacts the way they self-identify. The research journey began with a personal journey into Anishinaabe spirituality which left Chantal wondering why there are so few Red River Métis people going to ceremonies; rather, their predominant spiritual faith seemed to be Catholicism. Drawing upon Anishinaabe prophecy, oral history, and literature, the colonial context and its impacts upon historic Métis experiences with spirituality becomes apparent. The effects of Christianity and colonial legislation, such as the Indian Act, continue to influence Métis identity and relationships with Anishinaabe spirituality.
