IsKwe Live

November 12, 2017 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Collaborating partners Hart House, First Nations House and the Centre for Indigenous Studies are pleased to present IsKwe in concert. Supporting efforts to create Indigenous education and awareness, meaningful conversations and respectful relationships, this concert follows Indigenous Education Week at U of T and contributes to a rich environment in arts and culture, social justice dialogue and community engagement.

In a world where the sum of our lives is defined through another’s gaze, genuinely unchained artists like Winnipeg-bred Hamilton-based singer-songwriter IsKwé (pronounced iss-kway) a rare breed. Named one of the ‘Top 10 Artists to Watch in 2016’ by CBC Music, IsKwé’s (‘woman’ in Cree) unmistakable sound weaves her Irish and Cree/Dené roots with poignant politically charged lyrics, dark soulful R&B rhythms, electronic flourishes, and trip hop breakbeats.

During live shows, IsKwé’s elaborate face paint is both an homage to her ancestral roots and a platform upon which her message comes to life. “Painting was one of my first loves. Face paint allows me to expand my creative expression but it is also an act of reclaiming tradition.”

This event is part of Hart House’s Sunday Concert Series
