CIS Prof Ryan DeCaire on Learning Kanien’kéha
New Indigenous Studies faculty member, Ryan DeCaire sat down recently with U of T news to discuss the journey of learning his language. Ryan is Kanien’kehá:ka (Mohawk) from Wáhta Kanien’kehá:ka territory and says that he worries about the future of Kanien’kéha (Mohawk).
“In my late teens I began to realize that speakers are dwindling at a catastrophic rate and without strong and appropriate measures to revitalize the language at the community level, I would see my language gone within my lifetime,” explains Ryan. “I wanted our future generations to live again with Kanien’kéha as their first language.”
